Regression Bias in Using Solar Wind Measurements
نویسندگان
چکیده
Simultaneous solar wind measurements from the monitors, WIND and ACE, differ due to spatial temporal structure of wind. Correlation studies that use these as input may infer an incorrect correlation uncertainties arising this structure, especially at extreme rare values. In particular, regression analysis will lead a function whose slope is biased towards mean value measurement parameter. This article demonstrates bias by comparing simultaneous ACE measurements. A non-linear between them leads perception underestimation values one on average over other. Using numerical experiments, we show popular techniques such linear least-squares, orthogonal are not immune bias. Hence while using parameters independent variable in or analysis, random uncertainty can create unintended biases response dependent variable. More generally, effect impact both event-based, statistical magnetospheric forcing.

EISCAT measurements of the solar wind
EISCAT observations of interplanetary scintillation have been used to measure the velocity of the solar wind at distances between 15 and 130 Rx (solar radii) from the Sun. The results show that the solar wind consists of two distinct components, a fast stream with a velocity of &800 km s~1 and a slow stream at &400 km s~1. The fast stream appears to reach its final velocity much closer to the S...
متن کاملConstraining Low-frequency Alfvénic Turbulence in the Solar Wind Using Density Fluctuation Measurements
One proposed mechanism for heating the solar wind, from close to the sun to beyond ∼ 10 AU, invokes lowfrequency, oblique, Alfvén-wave turbulence. Because small-scale oblique Alfvén waves (kinetic Alfvén waves) are compressive, the measured density fluctuations in the solar wind place an upper limit on the amplitude of kinetic Alfvén waves and hence an upper limit on the rate at which the solar...
متن کاملMars Global Surveyor Measurements of the Martian Solar Wind Interaction
The solar wind at Mars interacts with the extended atmosphere and small-scale crustal magnetic fields. This interaction shares elements with a variety of solar system bodies, and has direct bearing on studies of the long-term evolution of the Martian atmosphere, the structure of the upper atmosphere, and fundamental plasma processes. The magnetometer (MAG) and electron reflectometer (ER) on Mar...
متن کاملSpatial correlation of solar-wind turbulence from two-point measurements.
Interplanetary turbulence, the best studied case of low frequency plasma turbulence, is the only directly quantified instance of astrophysical turbulence. Here, magnetic field correlation analysis, using for the first time only proper two-point, single time measurements, provides a key step in unraveling the space-time structure of interplanetary turbulence. Simultaneous magnetic field data fro...
متن کاملMeasurements of the direction of the solar wind using interplanetary scintillation
EISCAT observations of the interplanetary scintillation of a single source were made over an extended period of time, during which the orientation of the baselines between the two observing sites changed signi®cantly. Assuming that maximum correlation between the scintillations observed at the two sites occurs when the projected baseline is parallel to the direction of plasma ̄ow, this techniqu...
